All devices must use a unique MAC address ****to communicate with a WiFi network, which can enable the device to be tracked across networks and locations.

To enhance user privacy, phone manufacturers have introduced Private Address, a feature that hides a device’s actual WiFi MAC address by generating a random one—this is known as the Private WiFi Address.

Can a device have more than one Private WiFi Address?

🔹 Yes! Devices create a unique Private WiFi Address for each network they connect to. For instance, the Private WiFi Address your device uses at home will differ from the one it uses at your favorite coffee shop. Some devices even generate a new Private WiFi Address every 24 hours.

What is MAC Address Rotation?

🔹 On devices running iOS 18 and above, you also have the option to select a Rotating MAC Address. With this feature, your device’s Private Address will automatically rotate to a new randomized address every 2 weeks.

🔹 On devices running Android 12 and above, your phone’s MAC address may also rotate under certain circumstances (such as reconnecting to a network after more than 24hrs).

Why should I disable Private Address?

🔹 Disabling the Private Address feature allows HomeAware to provide more efficient presence detection for your device.

Each time a device changes its Private WiFi address:

🔹 HomeAware detects a new device, displaying duplicates in the app.

🔹 Presence tracking becomes inaccurate, requiring you to reassign the Presence Device.

🔹 Duplicate devices accumulate, making device management more difficult.
