A Media Access Control address (MAC address) serves as a unique identifier for a device, meaning no two devices have the same MAC address. This is important when there are many devices trying to communicate with a network. Each device must present its unique MAC address in order for network protocols to function properly.

What does a MAC address look like?

The MAC address is a 12 digit hexadecimal number that is most often displayed with a colon separating every two digits:

Can a device have more than one MAC address?

Yes. For each network interface (e.g. Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth) on your device, there is a unique MAC address associated with it.

For example, if your laptop has both an Ethernet port and WiFi built-in, you will see two MAC addresses in the device’s system configuration.

What is a WiFi MAC address?

When a device connects to a WiFi network, it will present its MAC address specific for WiFi network connections. It is often called the WiFi Address.
